their naval heritage. These toasts will have been composed by inhabitants of those cities and towns.
As an island and sea faring nation, it’s hardly surprising that the Navy casts a strong influence over Britain’s heritage and traditions. Of course one of the longest standing traditions associated with the Navy was their daily consumption of a tot of rum. This came to an end on July 31st 1970 and became known as Black Tot Day by those it affected most, the sailors. Wood’s 100 Rum, the smooth, mellow 57% ABV dark rum, is commemorating the passing of this great tradition as well as the other influences the navy exerts on our lives even today. We all recognise that sayings such as getting ‘shipshape’ clearly have nautical roots but did you know that other less obvious sayings have their origins in the navy too, sayings like, “footloose and fancy free”, “choc-a-block” or “thick and thin”. Fashion has its maritime influence too. Bell Bottom trousers were a classic piece of Naval uniform until 1977 to be replaced by flares and of course flares are experiencing a renaissance in high fashion today. And forget David Beckham and his array of tattoos the original tars of old could beat him hands down for designs and all applied without anaesthetic!
To celebrate Meet Your Navy and everything the Navy has given us, Wood’s 100 Rum would like to offer three lucky readers the chance to toast the Navy and its traditions with a bottle of the original Naval ‘tot’ Rum which has been produced for over 150 years.
Simply answer the questions below and you could be the lucky recipient of a bottle of Wood’s 100 Rum together with two limited edition Wood’s tot glasses:
1. When is Black Tot Day?
2. What ABV strength is Wood’s 100 Rum?
